The easiest way to get your stuff to and from storage

Need help moving into storage? Get 10 expert tips on packing, van hire and transport.

Your storage is sorted, but how are you getting it there?

We’ve all been there. You’ve finally found the perfect storage space, but now comes the not-so-small task of getting your stuff from A to B. Whether you’re moving a few boxes or an entire flat’s worth of belongings, it’s not always as easy as chucking it in the boot and calling it a day. Especially if your car’s more micra than moving van.

We’ve teamed up with AnyVan, the UK’s favourite way to move, to make moving into storage so much easier. Here are their top ten stress-saving tips on getting into storage:

Top ten tips on moving into storage

1. Measure up beforehand – make sure your stuff will actually fit in your chosen transport and the storage unit. It sounds obvious, but people forget! Note the biggest items and double-check any tight doorways, lifts or hallways at both ends. If you’ve got more than a few boxes or bulky furniture, your boot might not be big enough. Renting a van, like a Sprinter or Luton, could save you a lot of back-and-forth.

2. Get the right equipment – if you’re moving heavy items like a fridge, you’ll need a trolley. Straps, blankets, and gloves can also make a big difference. Don’t have the kit? No stress, this is where a man and van service can come in handy, especially if you’re short on time or extra hands.

3. Use a man and van service – depending on what you’re moving, your car might not cut the mustard (it’s very hard to fit a king-size bed in a Fiat 500!). Consider renting a van, or better yet, booking a moving service. A man and van service, like AnyVan, means you get the right-sized vehicle and someone to help with the heavy lifting..

4. Protect your prized possessions – it’s common sense,  but don’t just chuck your valuables in a box – use soft furnishings like blankets and jumpers to protect other items . If you’re worried about breakages or you’re moving something irreplaceable, it’s worth checking if your moving service includes some kind of compensation, and uses vetted movers. Moving services should have cover as standard.AnyVan offers £50K complimentary cover on all bookings!

5. Think about how many people you’ll need – how much you’re moving will affect how many people you need. If it’s just a few bits, you might be fine solo. But for larger items or awkward spaces, a second pair of hands (or more) can save you time, and potential back pain! Don’t overdo it, moving’s not meant to be a one-person show.

6. Time your move cleverly – if you’re hiring a service to help you move, then try to avoid end-of-month weekends or bank holidays if you can,  as prices go up and vans book out fast. A Tuesday morning might just be your golden ticket.

7. Check if your storage unit has parking/loading bays – some storage sites are tighter than a London parking space. Make sure your van can get close to the entrance or loading bay. Fewer steps = less stress.

Bonus tips:

We’ve told you how to get your stuff into storage without breaking a sweat, but before that, you’ve got to pack it properly. As moving experts, we’ve seen what works (and what doesn’t) when it comes to boxing up your life. These quick tips will save you time, space and a world of faff when it’s time to unpack.

8. Label like your life depends on it – label your boxes, and label them clearly so you can see the labels once the boxes are stacked.

9.  Use stackable, sturdy boxes – flimsy or odd-shaped boxes make stacking a pain. Angus, our founder, is adamant that banana boxes are absolutely the worst thing you can use (he goes on about it all the time!). We suggest you stick to the same-sized, sturdy boxes for Tetris-level stacking.

10. Leave room for air – if you’re storing things long-term, avoid packing boxes too tightly. A bit of airflow can help prevent musty smells, especially for soft furnishings or clothes. Pop a moisture absorber in with anything fabric-based to keep things fresh.
