What you need to know before renting a garage in Glasgow

If you’re looking for a garage in Glasgow, you need more than just a space. You need something that actually works for the way you live, and the part of the city you live in. Not all garages here are equal. In fact, most of them weren’t even designed with modern cars in mind.

In areas like Garnethill or Hillhead, a lot of the garages still have 2m-wide entrances. That might have been fine when they were built, but it’s a tight squeeze for today’s vehicles, especially anything larger than a small hatchback. Most people now use them to store house contents during a move, keep business stock out of the living room, or run side projects like bike repair or online reselling.

Garages near the River Kelvin or the White Cart Water, especially in Cathcart and the Southside, are prone to damp. If the unit doesn’t have raised flooring or ventilation, anything stored for more than a couple of months ends up smelling like it’s been in a cellar. If you check the SEPA flood risk maps, you’ll see exactly where these risk zones are, and it’s not just near the rivers. Some lower-lying parts of Dennistoun, for example, have water issues too, especially after heavy winter rain.

In fact, the number of garages seen with visible water damage has increased year on year, especially after the storms in late 2023. That’s why Stashbee hosts who’ve invested in drainage or upgraded roofs tend to get booked out quickly.

Glasgow Garage Prices

Garage rentals in Glasgow ranges from around £120 to £230 per month. Garages in places like Finnieston or Kelvinbridge will cost more, often upwards of £200.

You’ll find better value in Pollokshields or Shawlands, where the garages are often wider and have proper drive-up access. Even Cathcart and the East End, areas like Carntyne or Haghill, have a surprising number of solid, dry units if you’re willing to go just a bit further out.

Council lock-ups still exist, but availability is patchy at best. In areas like Maryhill and Dennistoun, the waitlists can stretch to six months or more. And the condition of some of those garages hasn’t kept pace with what people need. Renters are sometimes offered spaces only to find them full of rubbish, padlocked from the inside, or completely inaccessible because the access lane hadn’t been maintained.

What to check for

If you’re planning to store more than just a couple of boxes, you should check if there’s lighting (a lot don’t have it), see if the entrance is wide enough for your vehicle (if you’re storing one), and making sure it’s usable in winter.

Business users have started snapping up garages in Hillington and Cambuslang for this exact reason. You get industrial-adjacent space without the commercial lease headaches. And for VAT-registered businesses, sub-15m² units can be particularly useful from a tax perspective.

We also see seasonal spikes in demand, spring and autumn being the worst. In summer, students use garages to store their things between flats. In winter, homeowners use them for bikes, furniture, or decorations they don’t want dampening in the shed. That seasonal pressure means the best garages don’t stay available for long.

Renting Through Stashbee

Stashbee gives you access to private garages across Glasgow without having to rely on council waitlists or letting agents who don’t return your calls. You see real photos, check access hours, and can book instantly without being locked into long-term contracts.

Whether you’re based in the West End and just need somewhere dry for your bikes, or you're in the Southside looking for a secure unit for your online shop stock, there's almost certainly a garage in Glasgow that fits, it just hasn’t been easy to find until now.

Frequently asked questions

Absolutely. You largely have two options. Council garages do exist, mostly around older housing developments, but getting one depends a lot on where you live. In places like Dennistoun or Hillhead, the waiting lists can drag on for months, and even if your name comes up, the condition of the space can be hit or miss.

Private garages tend to be easier. There’s no application process, no waiting around, and no need to be a council tenant. With Stashbee, you just search by area, see what’s available, and book directly the same day in a lot of cases.

Most private garages in Glasgow go for somewhere between £120 and £230 a month. The lower end usually gets you a basic lock-up in areas like Carntyne or Pollokshields . If you’re looking in places like Finnieston or Kelvinbridge, it costs a bit more.

If you don’t need to access it often, you’ll usually find more availability and better pricing a little further out. Mount Florida, Dennistoun, or Shawlands are good bets for that.

If you’re looking for something closer to the city centre, maybe for business use or regular access, you’ll be competing with more demand, especially in Finnieston or the West End. Some of the newer builds near Glasgow Harbour have well-kept garages, but you’ll pay a bit more for the convenience.

Some are, some aren’t. Glasgow’s wet most of the year, and older garages, especially near rivers or in low-lying spots- can suffer from damp. We’ve had people storing things in Cathcart or around the Kelvin end up with water damage after just a few months.

Best thing to do is check the drainage, see if the garage sits on a slope or has ventilation, and ask the owner if they’ve had issues in winter. If you’re storing furniture, tools, or stock, it’s worth making sure the roof’s solid and the flooring isn’t just bare concrete that soaks through.

If you’ve got time to wait, maybe. Council garages are cheaper, and some are in decent locations, but availability is the issue. Some areas give priority to tenants or local residents, and the application process can drag on, especially in high-demand spots.

If you need something now, or just want to know exactly what you’re getting, private garages are a much simpler option. You can see what’s available, check the size and security, and move in straight away if it works for you.
