Information about Southwark

"Southwark", "The Borough", or simply the "Square Mile", is a very old district of south London. It is on the northern bank of the Thames and mainly consists of commercial and industrial buildings. The area includes Bankside under the London Bridge, which was once a very important landing stage for boats entering the City of London. It has many narrow streets and alley-ways, most of them pedestrianised.

Southwark is bordered by other districts including: Bermondsey; Camberwell; Peckham; Lambeth; The Royal Borough of Greenwich; and the City of London (The City).

Booking Parking in Southwark With Stashbee

Southwark is one of the UK’s oldest and most historic boroughs and has long been a popular tourist destination thanks to its proximity to the River Thames. However, recent years have ushered in a shiny new era for South London - and Southwark in particular. The borough itself is smaller than many other major areas of London, but each neighbourhood still offers its own set of charms to both locals and visitors.

Southwark’s main transport links can be found near Old Kent Road, Surrey Quays, Camberwell, Peckham and Dulwich. Even though the borough is not as big as you might expect, things are still busy enough for Southwark’s garages and car parks to fill up at the drop of a hat. That’s when a platform like ours comes in most handy.

With Stashbee, booking a parking space is nothing short of a breeze. After using our interactive map to find the spot you’re looking for, just decide how long you want to stay. From there, you’re just a couple of clicks away from booking (and later renewing) an hourly, short-term or long-term parking space rental.

Southwark Transport Options

Southwark offers visitors and locals alike plenty of choice when it comes to public transport. There are fourteen different tube and train stations to keep in mind, including major interchanges like London Bridge and Canada Water, plus more local stations like East Dulwich and Peckham Rye.

In fact, Southwark itself is a tube station in its own right, though it’s only served by the Jubilee line, whereas the nearby Waterloo station also offers National Rail, Bakerloo and Northern Line access, as well as the Jubilee Line. Meanwhile, Docklands Light Railway stations in the vicinity include Deptford Bridge and Greenwich. Waterloo East, London Road and Waterloo are the three mainline stations closest to Southwark tube station.

You should know that none of the tube lines have actual car parks attached to them. For this reason, it might be useful to have Stashbee on speed dial - metaphorically speaking. All of our listings for parking in Southwark come with pre-set prices and no hidden fees, so whether you’re visiting as a one-off, or spending longer in the area, we’ve got you covered. Your parking Host might even be able to give you some tips about local attractions to visit while you’re there.

Things to Do in Southwark

Just like your parking Host, the Stashbee team is also good for a list of interesting things to do in Southwark. From eating incredible food, to cultural and historical experiences, these are a few of the many activities for you to consider:

  • Borough Market is beloved by foodies and casual eaters alike, from all over the country. It’s perfect for anyone who fancies a quick stroll past the stalls, or those looking for an outing for lunch. Full disclosure: it might be hard to resist the delicious baked treats and wide range of fresh fruit and veg when you’re there. You might even find something exotic among the diverse group of regular vendors.
  • Southwark Cathedral gets a lot of visitors every year. Because it was one of the first cathedrals to open its doors (and heart!) to the LGBTQ+ community, many tourists have added it to their list of must-see landmarks. And it is truly a sight to behold, especially when you consider that parts of its structure are over 800 years old!
  • The LondonFashion and Textile Museum offers a somewhat different feel to the cathedral. Founded by fashion icon Zandra Rhodes, the space hosts regular exhibitions covering a variety of different themes. And don’t worry - you don’t have to dress in your finest couture to attend.

In a post-lockdown world, supporting the Southwark Playhouse is an easy way to help the arts scene in the local area get back on its feet. Initially built to showcase the borough’s most talented actors and actresses, it has since expanded into a two-studio playhouse for work written by locals, and further afield. On top of hosting some incredible productions, the space also has a historic feel that has to be experienced to be fully comprehended.

Where can I park in Southwark?

Parking in Southwark is very limited. Parking spaces are expensive and there are many traffic wardens. Parking within Southwark is at a premium, and motorists can easily be fined for parking offences such as parking on double yellow lines or in the wrong zone. Parking fines can range from £70 to over £100. Parking regulations are in place to stop vehicles parking on pavements, blocking entrances and exits of businesses, or parking for too long or in the wrong area.

It can be difficult to find a parking space in Southwark as it is densely populated with many cars. Parking within the Borough of Southwark can be hard to find, but there are some parking spaces in the outskirts of Southwark. Parking near London Bridge is often a problem and parking at night or at the weekends will likely cost double. If you see a parking space that you want, get there early in order to secure it.

Is parking free in Southwark?

Parking in Southwark can cost around £5 to £25 per hour or part an hour. Parking for 24 hours varies from between £8 and £20 depending on where you park. Parking spaces are available at short-term multi-storey car parks, but there is usually a charge for parking in these facilities. There are very few parking spaces that offer parking for free, as parking bays in Southwark are highly sought after and often fill up quickly.

Parking spaces in Southwark

Spaces are available in both on-street spaces and off-street parking. Parking is very limited within Southwark, meaning there are few parking bays available for residents or businesses. However, parking spaces do exist throughout the Borough of Southwark and can be located at various car parks. Parking in Southwark can take a little longer than usual during peak hours. Parking in Southwark is in high demand and the spaces are often full. Parking on a weekday can be difficult as offices in Southwark tend to fill up with cars during the day, so it is best to park at night or on weekends when there are fewer cars around.

How to Make a Booking

Booking your Southwark parking space is a breeze. Once you’ve found a spot in the perfect area, click on the listing and check that all the details are correct. Then enter your start date (when you’ll need the parking space from) and the estimated duration (how long you’ll need the space for) and click ‘Book Space’.

Your booking will be confirmed when the Host accepts your request. The space will be taken off the market immediately and your Host will provide you with any pin codes, fobs, or keys that you’ll need. You’ll be able to use the parking space as soon as your booking begins.

Instant booking

There’s also an instant booking option on some listings to speed the process up. Instead of waiting for the Host to accept your request, you can make a quick payment to book a spot then and there.

How Does Payment Work?

Once you’ve found your perfect Southwark parking space, you’ll be asked to put down a payment. Those funds will be held in your account until the Host confirms your booking. Only once they have confirmed the booking will the money be withdrawn from your account. If your Host doesn’t accept your booking request, the funds will be released back to you automatically.

The first month of your booking must be paid the day before the booking begins. Subsequent payments should be made monthly through our secure payment provider Stripe (you should be sure to make all payments through the Stashbee website). You will be charged automatically until you or the Host decide to end the booking.

What Protection is Offered?

We’re here to make finding a parking space in Southwark safe, simple, and hassle free. These are the steps we take.

Deposits

You will be asked to pay a security deposit when creating a booking request for some of our Southwark parking spaces. As long as there’s no damage caused, outstanding payments, or lost keys, fobs, or parking permits, that deposit will be refunded in full at the end of the booking.

The only other way that you could stand to lose some of your security deposit is if you cancel your booking after the 24-hour cooling off period. You can read more about that in our Guest Cancellations and Refunds policy.

Payment

Pay for your booking through Stashbee (via our secure payment provider Stripe) and you’ll be protected by our Booking Terms and Cancellations and Refunds policy. We do not store your payment details and never share them with anyone else.

Payments that are made outside of Stashbee are not protected and won’t be covered by our terms and conditions. If you’ve inadvertently paid for your booking outside of Stashbee then you should get in touch with our team.

Booking

We ask every Stashbee Host to verify their identity, so you’ll know exactly who you’re dealing with. The ID Verified badge on their listing shows that their account has been verified by our team.

As a Guest, you’ll also need to verify your account before you can book your parking space. You can do that easily by uploading a photo of your ID. This helps to keep the platform safe. Find out more about verifying your account.

Before every booking starts, you and your Host will be asked to sign our Booking Terms. This will help to make sure that you’re protected in the unlikely event that anything goes wrong. We’ll send you a copy of your Booking Terms, which you’ll be able to find in the ‘Documents’ section of your booking dashboard.

Can I Park on a Single Yellow Line in Southwark?

That’s a firm no. Do that and there’d be carnage on the streets of Southwark.

You can only park in designated parking bays that are indicated by white lines. Even then, you can only park in those bays if you meet the requirements for that bay. For example, you might have to pay and display or have a parking permit with the relevant code.

You should never park in areas with single or double yellow lines as you could receive a fine.

Is Parking Free on Bank Holidays in Southwark?

Yes, free on-street parking is available during bank holidays in Southwark but only in certain locations. That includes:

  • Permit holder’s parking bays (except Zone C1)
  • Parking spaces that are usually pay and display
  • Council-run car parks (not including in Southwark Parks where charges still apply)
